Molk Factory

Molk Factory is an artist collective based in Amsterdam, with a studio in the Broedplaats Plantage Dok. Our main focus lies on the broad world of sound. We are composers, musicians, sound artists and flirt constantly with interdisciplinary concepts. We love to host concerts, multimedia events, collaborate with likeminded folks, release music and build community.

Our aim is to create a space for listening, experimenting, gathering and sharing.

With our many years of experience we have developed the expertise and skills to produce our own work. We compose, arrange, perform, record albums, make registrations of concerts and rehearsals. We find of great importance to build an audiovisual archive, not only for us but for our local networks.

We are Frank Rosaly, Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti, Jochem van Tol and Rosa Ronsdorf.

Molk Factory is part of the Broedplaats Plantage Dok. A collective of autonomous artists, builders, initiators and instigators.

About Plantage:
"Plantage Dok is a building located in the centre of Amsterdam that has served many functions in its life. It has been a church, a printing business and a school. In 1998 the building was squatted by a group of 10 people who themselves had much experience with squatting and collective awareness in Amsterdam. In 2000 the group bought and renovated the building with government assistance thus securing its future. The Plantage Dok is very much a collective project. It is a building that is run by the people who work there along lines of cooperation and equality. Everybody involved share the responsibility and are encouraged to bring forth their own initiatives. These days some 30 people are present in the building. They are concerned in many fields of activity. There are architects, visual artists, actors, political activists, crafts people, musicians and designers.
The (semi) public facilities of the building are a large hall The Dokzaal, a café and gallery space The Dokhuis Gallery and an artist in residence The Dokhuis Guest Studio. The Dokzaal is a communal space for activities inside the building and is also used by outside organizations for various cultural activities. The café/gallery is used for exhibitions and performances. See agenda for upcoming events."

Molk Records

With a small batch of releases per year, as Molk Folk we focus on putting out our own work. With a special attention on supporting the community of musicians and artists around us. We see it as a way to reinforce a self-organized mindset, while supporting the music scene in Amsterdam.

Molk Nights

Since before and after the pandemic we have been hosting events and concerts, both at our studio and at the beautiful Dokzaal and Dok Café. These events are intimate, special and have the intention to support not only the DIY fabric of the cultural sector in Amsterdam, but also to support our wide international network of artists visiting Amsterdam.

With our expertise and years of making music, performance and sound art, we have developed the skills to record and make registrations of concerts and rehearsals. We consider of great importance to contribute in building an audiovisual archive, for us and our community.

For the last year we have been working in close collaboration with the new concert series LOKAAL. It is a joint initiative by folks of Molk Factory, De Ruimte, Space is The Place and DoEk.

About
“On Mestizx, we share musical and ancestral roots within the Latinx diaspora of Bolivia, Brazil and Puert Rico. In it, we pay deep reverence to our lineage without the confines of tradition or genre. We are fascinated by the never-ending beauty of latin rhythmic patterns, microtonal mountain flutes and oblon swing from the pre and post-colonial Latin American region, with references to free jazz, electronica Chicago post-rock, bomba, plena, cumbia, ambient, Andean, minimal, noise, punk and folk. The record illustrates several sides of a decolonization process in a deliberately loose, eclectic & celebratory story. The music harkens to the richness of ritualistic gatherings, which they recognise as an intrinsic form of resilience and resistance, as well as a deeply necessary practice that most humans seek— in church, ritual, the dance club, music festivals and other gatherings. An atmosphere of their native ecologies appear throughout the record. Allegorical symbolism and dance traditions from the Caribbean and Andes materialise, sometimes as a distant memory, often scrupulously. These aspects have shaped the music to represent Latin cultures and it is deeply woven in the fabric of an eccentric, speculative song-story, rhyming with echoes of protes music marked by post-dictator realities and various socio-political instabilities.”

PRESS
The Guardian
"Multi-instrumentalists Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and Frank Rosaly play freely with the
nuances of Latin rhythms on their debut Mestizx (International Anthem), producing infectiously kinetic
compositions that reference jazz, cumbia, bomba and much more."

Glide Magazine
"The album is a narrative arc from introspection to action, beautifully rendered in a mosaic
of sound that challenges, delights, and inspires. It’s a testament to the power of music to bridge the past and future, making MESTIZX a pivotal debut in the landscape of contemporary world music."
PopMatters "MESTIZX is unquestionably cosmic, but it is also grounded in the real lives and spaces of
artists who refuse to be broken into cultural shards and instead understand themselves as many things at once."

All Music****
"MESTIZX is unlike any other album. It is where the historic cultural past meets present-day
conflict and jingoism. Undaunted, this duo chart a direction and unfettered hope for the future, holism, and acceptance."

Treblezine
"They chart a path forward, just follow the rhythm to see where it leads."
Essential Releases Bandcamp "Amidst the landscape of MESTIZX, the ancestral and the futuristic coexist in symbiosis."

Molars
"It’s a remarkable album: searching, morally and politically outspoken, wildly entertaining."
Monolith Cocktail " This is music that draws you in; unfurls its depths over time. The vocals are
simultaneously beautiful yet split on occasions into a spirit shadow form; a near apparitional invocation
that’s separated from its sister, a guide that takes us back to the old phantasmagoria of pre-colonial
conquest..."

Now Muzika
“MESTIZX is the best embodiment of these metaphysical states. Yes, this is definitely one of
those 2024 albums."

World treasure music
"A deep and experimental jazz album"

Jazz fun Germany
"MESTIZX finds support in the communal, celebratory, soul-comforting and moving
music.”

Molk Projects AWICHAS

AWICHAS is a psychedelic folk/electronica formation founded by Amsterdam-based artist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti and experimental musician Jochem van Tol, in collaboration with drummer Frank Rosaly, Nihiloxica-percussionist Jacob Maskell-Key, pianist/composer Lida Brouskari, and artist/vocalist Julia Werner. The band turned heads with rapturous, genre-blending performances at beloved festivals such as Le Guess Who?, Rewire and North Sea Round Town.

AWICHAS doesn’t treat folklore and electronics as sonic opposites, but as equal agents of transcendence. That dialogue comes down to a huge musical inspiration and main theme for the project: the "tropas" communities in the Andes that play together during ceremonies; which Ibelisse compares to multiple oscillators, in the case of the electronics being the multiple "voices" of these tropas.

A big proponent of AWICHAS’s magic is the playful, often surprising ways the modern and the mystical can potentially meet in the middle; creating fun juxtapositions that feel rife with spiritual fervor and ingenuity. As of now AWICHAS as a collaborative entity continues to mushroom at an infectious pace, with an abundance of perspectives, sounds, influences and materials under a single umbrella.

So, in the words of famous sociologist, activist and anarchist Bolivian thinker Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui: Un mundo ch’ixi es posible – a world where all contradictions have to live with each other, is indeed possible.

PRESS
“The blend of what you might call "folklore" and "hi-tech" elements is exciting and
thrilling. It borders on ritual, but ultimately, it's a true "concert." These are all top-notch
musicians who don't tolerate any "messiness." It also takes some getting used to: Latin
music without strings or wind instruments. And the combination of vocals, electronics,
and drums often has a somewhat understated quality. But at the same time, the result,
thanks in part to Ferragutti's own performance, is exhilarating. And the wealth of musical
discoveries captivates the audience on stage. Take, for example, the
aforementioned Bolivian flute harmonies, which initially emerge from the sampler but
reappear later in the concert in the singers' voices. In the finale, the rhythms become
more asymmetrical and the movements more exuberant. When it's over, time seems to
have flown by.” Peter Bruyn - Gonzocircus Magazine

“...Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti is a shape-shifter, world-builder and embodiment virtuoso,
who inhabits worlds that are transcendent of common knowledge....” Diane Petcov -
FIBER Festival

“...Acting as an unconventional high priestess, Ibelisse’s voice is as varied as the wind’s
directions. Coaxing and sensual ...she can also employ a sharpened punkish edge to her
singing voice...” Justin Turford - Truth&Lies UK

“...their combined international roots serve as the foundation for the unique and singular
chemistry of their music. Using synthesisers and live tape manipulation among
instruments and vocals... this is like improvised jazz tones into jet-setting, shape- shifting
hyperdrive...” Jeremy Young - Soundfly Magazine New York US
